Find free learning to improve the skills section of your resume.

As all job seekers in Seattle know, the list of qualifications for positions is getting more and more intense. Is there anyone who really is an “Excel guru” and an operatic singer? Not likely. All joking aside though, basic skills on popular computer programs is essential for just about any job besides retail (and even then it can be expected) or truck driving (which requires a whole other slew of certifications).

Chances are you are relatively skilled with the basic Microsoft programs like Word and have faith you can Bing or Google search any tips on using Excel to make it through the workday. This confidence isn’t usually enough to convince hiring teams unfortunately. Everyone wants to see at least certifications if not a Masters in Excel and Publisher.

The Seattle Times career blog recently ran a great piece about how Microsoft E-learning is extending its free computer lessons for WorkSource customers. If you haven’t been in touch with WorkSource, it is something to consider. The have a big list of services for people just like you – job seekers. They can hook you up with workshops, information, consultations and – you guessed it – trainings, just like the Microsoft E-Learning.

Even a simple little course on Microsoft’s suite of products which are popularly used in the workplace around not just our area but the world and country will give you resume a big boost. Also, it feels good to be learning something in between searching endlessly for jobs. Give yourself a leg up and start toning your computer skills.
