You never have to look far to find a coffee shop in Seattle. From Starbucks, Tully’s and other chains to independently owned coffee shops which have their own unique feel and coffee, a cup
of Joe is never out of reach. This leads to an impressive demand for baristas in the city and yet it can be tricky to land a coffee making job because of all the intense competition.
If you do not have experience as a barista it can seem nearly impossible to land a job at a coffee shop. But if your heart is set on pulling shots and foaming milk then don’t give up. There are a variety of schools which offer barista courses to teach you the ropes or you could just search for places to gain experience such as your church or another organization’s espresso cart. Once you know the basics of making coffee you will be much more desired by coffee shop managers.
Another good step is getting your food handler’s permit which is you can get by studying and taking a test online. This will show potential employers you are serious about working the food industry and that you are a go-getter who doesn’t have to be constantly reminded to do things outside of work.
Also, consider branching out from applying to exclusively coffee shops and look for delis and cafes which have an espresso machine but are more concerned with your good attitude and customer service skills than if you can create latte art. After a year working in a deli where you learn to make the occasional cappuccino you will be bumped to first in line as a potential hire in the coffee shop you want to work in.
